Slipstream #6: Surviving Indie Horror

This week on Slipstream, I continue on with the innovative horror mechanics in gaming theme and shifted over to PC titles. Two new indie horrors are redefining what survival horror can be in a big way. I've lost a lot of hours and a lot of sleep to these two games and I don't see that trend stopping soon. It's a blessing and a curse when indie developers say "we'll just keep giving you free DLC updates to make the game bigger and better." Watch the episode below then click through for all the behind the scenes gossip.

  • I will be cosplaying at NYCC as Wilson from Don't Starve. I've always wanted to do a steampunk cosplay and the Ed Gorey-like illustration style appeals to me. I will be painting the inking onto the costume and crafting the wig from scratch.
  • Don't Starve makes me howl with laughter; Paranormal makes me howl with fear. Don't Starve has scary moments in a silly comedy horror game; Paranormal is unending horror and atmosphere.
  • Paranormal's campaign mode is very similar to a story/hypertext project I've been working on for years. That's what drew me into the game. Artist discovers paranormal activity and sets out to capture it through a different medium is a fascinating concept.
  • I grew up on console gaming. I failed miserably on my first Paranormal playthrough because I A) did not notice the game controls on the background of the title screen and B) did not even think that "F" would trigger the flashlight. I couldn't even see the bed to climb in and recharge my camera.
  • There was actual gameplay footage in this video originally. Unfortunately, Adobe Premiere Elements was not cooperating when I went to upload and actually scrambled the footage when it went to YouTube. I'm not happy.

Right now, you can get Don't Starve through my GameFanShop partner store and help support Sketchy Details. New updates on the game come out every 2-3 weeks and they always shakes things up in pretty noticeable ways.

Paranormal is available through Steam Greenlight. The official release date is 19 October.

You can follow all of my new video content at Sketchy Details @YouTube. Like, comment, share, subscribe, and help a new media criticism channel grow. The focus is very much genre content--horror, sci-fi, and fantasy--and DIY pop culture projects.
