Listen: "6'7" by Lil Wayne featuring Cory Gunz

I have a bad habit of getting hooked on a song to the point that I can listen to it for hours on loop without break. Sometimes it's some bizarre novelty in the song--a certain instrument, a repeated lick, a particularly compelling vocal passage. Other times, it's my way of trying to figure out how a song works.

Lil Wayne's new single "6'7" is a combination of both. When I first heard it, I had to wonder who would use "Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)" as the beat of a rap track. I just couldn't figure it out. I got excited whenever I caught it on the radio. I'd dance along in the car and crank up the volume.

Then I learned it was Lil Wayne's track and it began to make sense. If nothing else, the man knows how to pick a unique beat. This song was going to get play on the basis of the unique hook. At the very least, it would be included in live-mixing shows to transition between different tracks.

I've been trying to figure out just how the song works. The rhymes are strong even if the overall theme of the song is varied. The only explanation I can come up with for how well it works is the allure of Lil Wayne. His style and execution is always strong and distinct.

This is a very long-winded way to say you should give the song a try. It's fun and perfect party material.
